How to Get Rid of Lice
Are you wondering how to get rid of lice? A lot of people are against using the medically approved products of head lice treatment because they contain insecticides or pesticides that in larger doses could be damaging, if not fatal.
Consequently, some people do not treat the infestation and try to let it run its own course. Frankly, that is the last thing I would do, but hey, it's your decision.
Others follow the old wives tale that head lice don't like dirty hair, so they stop washing their hair regularly. Again, not sure I would choose this path!
How to Get Rid of Lice with Alternative Treatments
Humanity has, since the dawn of time, been using natural remedies to alleviate the symptoms of a multitude of conditions. Some of these remedies have been proven and are still used a lot today. So if you are wondering how to get rid of lice, maybe one of these remedies can work for you.
For example, aloe vera and honey are two natural sources that have been proven to have great properties for healing some conditions but others have not been proven so are not supported by medical research. That's why they are called alternative treatments.
Here's a small list of alternative treatments and details of how they work.
Please remember that these alternative treatments are simply a guide to what is available and is not meant as medical advice.
Olive oil
If you apply olive oil in the hair of someone infested with head lice then use a fine comb to run through the hair, you can comb out the head lice and nits. This may need to be done once a day for a couple of days until all head lice and nits have been removed.
Neem Seed Oil
In India, neem seed oil has been used for thousands of years as a natural insecticide. Because of its low toxicity levels, neem seed oil has is deemed an excellent alternative to using man made insecticides on the skin, or in the case of head lice and nits on the scalp. How to get rid of lice with neem seed oil? Simply rubbing the oil on to the scalp and into the hair and leav for a period of time before washing the neem seed oil away.
Alcohol
Head lice are quite robust and can become resistant to certain types of treatments like insecticides over time. However, alcohol is one product that lice cannot adapt to and it kills them quite easily. By using a fine comb and dipping it in alcohol before combing, you can catch lots of head lice in the comb and the alcohol should catch any that you miss. Be very careful however since alcohol can dry the scalp out and cause a lot of damage if any gets in the eye of the infected person.
Tea tree and Peppermint
Our last alternative treatment is a shampoo made from two parts tea tree oil and one part peppermint oil, which is believed to kill off the head lice and nits if used as a shampoo every two days for a period of eight days.
